Worship at St. James' Episcopal Church, Mansfield

At St. James', worship is at the heart of our life together. Every Sunday we gather to pray, hear God's Word proclaimed, sing together, and be formed as followers of Jesus Christ. Whether you are a lifelong Episcopalian, come from another Christian tradition, or have never attended church before, you are welcome here. Our worship is rooted in the rich traditions of the Anglican Communion while remaining warm, accessible, and welcoming to all.

Our Sunday Worship

We worship using Rite II from the Book of Common Prayer, which uses contemporary language while preserving the beauty and structure of historic Anglican worship.

Our schedule alternates between two principal services:

Holy Eucharist (Every Other Sunday)

Holy Eucharist, also called Holy Communion or the Lord's Supper, is the principal act of worship in the Episcopal Church. During this service we hear readings from Scripture, pray together, listen to a sermon, affirm our faith, and gather around Christ's table to receive the consecrated bread and wine as spiritual nourishment. All baptized Christians, regardless of denomination, are invited to receive Holy Communion. If you prefer not to receive Communion, you are always welcome to come forward for a blessing.

Morning Prayer (Alternating Sundays)

On the Sundays when Holy Eucharist is not celebrated, we gather for Morning Prayer. This ancient daily office has been prayed by Christians for centuries and centers on Scripture, psalms, prayers, hymns, and a sermon or reflection. Morning Prayer reminds us that God's presence is found not only at the altar but also in the faithful rhythm of prayer and the hearing of God's Word.

Music

Every Sunday service at St. James includes congregational music, an essential part of our worship that helps us express our faith, praise, thanksgiving, and prayer. Whether we are singing a joyful hymn, reflecting through a quiet anthem, or lifting our voices together in familiar melodies, music deepens our connection with God and with one another.

Our hymns are drawn primarily from The Hymnal 1982 and other authorized Episcopal resources, connecting us with generations of Christians who have worshiped before us while also enriching our worship with music that speaks to today's Church.

Under the leadership of our dedicated Music Director, our music ministry is made possible through the shared gifts of many people. Members of our Music Committee work throughout the year to help plan music that reflects the liturgical seasons and complements the readings and themes of each Sunday. Their thoughtful collaboration helps create meaningful and inspiring worship for our parish family.

We are also blessed by the generosity of guest musicians and vocalists who occasionally join us for worship. Their talents add variety and beauty to our services, especially during feast days, holy seasons, and special celebrations. Whether through organ, piano, instrumental music, soloists, or ensemble performances, these guests enrich our worship and remind us that music is a gift meant to be shared.

At St. James, everyone is invited to sing. You do not need to have a perfect voice or musical training, only a willing heart. Together, our voices become one offering of praise, glorifying God and strengthening the bonds of our faith community.

What to Expect

If you've never attended an Episcopal service before, don't worry—you won't be expected to know what to do. You'll receive a service bulletin that contains everything you need, including prayers, hymns, and directions for participating. Feel free to stand, sit, or kneel as you are comfortable, and simply follow along with the congregation.

Our worship is reverent but not rigid, rooted in tradition while embracing hospitality. Children are welcome, questions are welcome, and wherever you are on your journey of faith, you are welcome.

After worship, we invite everyone to stay for fellowship and refreshments. We'd love the opportunity to meet you, answer your questions, and welcome you into our community.

Come as you are. There is no dress code, no expectation that you have everything figured out, and no requirement that you be Episcopalian. We believe God welcomes all people, and we strive to do the same.
